The Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is a hardy, evergreen fern native to eastern North America, prized for its glossy, dark green fronds that remain vibrant throughout the winter season. Named for its festive appearance, the leaflets of P. acrostichoides are often said to resemble tiny Christmas stockings. This fern thrives in shaded, woodland settings with moist, well-drained, acidic soil, making it ideal for naturalized gardens and erosion control on slopes. Growing in dense clumps about 1 to 2 feet tall, it adds year-round texture and color to the landscape while providing shelter for small wildlife. Its resilience and low maintenance needs make it a valuable addition to native and shade gardens alike.
