Shenandoah Red Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’) is an elegant, compact cultivar of native switchgrass celebrated for its vibrant red hues and graceful movement. This warm-season perennial grass forms upright clumps of fine-textured green foliage that gradually deepens to burgundy-red as the season progresses, reaching peak color in late summer to fall. Delicate, airy flower panicles emerge above the foliage in midsummer, adding soft texture and visual interest. Adaptable and hardy, Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’ thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor and dry conditions. Its brilliant color, drought resistance, and tidy form make it an excellent choice for ornamental borders, meadow plantings, or naturalized landscapes.
