Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is a native, deciduous shrub prized for its clusters of small, fragrant yellow flowers that bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge. It typically grows 6–12 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded, multi-stemmed habit that works well in naturalized areas, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. Thriving in moist, well-drained soils, it adapts to a wide range of light conditions but performs best in partial shade. Female plants produce bright red berries in fall when a male pollinator is present, adding seasonal interest and attracting birds. The aromatic foliage turns a soft yellow in autumn, and the plant serves as a host for spicebush swallowtail butterflies, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly landscapes.
