Shamrock Inkberry
- Height: 3 to 4 feet
- Spread: 3 to 4 feet
- Light preference: Full sun to partial shade
‘Shamrock’ Inkberry (Ilex glabra 'Shamrock') is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its upright, mounded form and deep green, leathery foliage that holds color well through winter. A cultivar of the native inkberry holly, ‘Shamrock’ typically grows 3 to 4 feet tall and slightly wider, making it an excellent choice for low hedges, foundation plantings, or naturalistic borders. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, acidic soils, with excellent tolerance for wet or poorly drained conditions. Although its small white flowers are not showy, they can give way to black berries in fall if a male pollinator is nearby. ‘Shamrock’ is valued for its compact habit, improved foliage retention at the base (compared to other inkberries), and its utility in native, low-maintenance, or wildlife-supporting gardens.
